Flooring Selection

Carpet Selection Guide: Fibers, Pile and Padding

What to know before buying carpet: fiber types, pile styles, density and why the pad matters.

2 minute read

Key takeaways

  • Nylon and polyester are the two common fibers, each with strengths.
  • Density matters more than thickness.
  • Padding affects comfort, sound and the carpet lifespan.
  • Cut pile feels soft; loop pile is tougher and tighter.

Fibers

Nylon is resilient and holds up well to traffic. Polyester is soft, stain resistant and often bright in color. Wool is natural and long-lasting but needs more care.

Ask how the carpet performs in stain and wear tests, not just how soft it feels.

Pile styles

Cut pile has soft, upright tufts, from plush to textured. Loop pile has uncut loops that wear well and hide footprints. Cut-and-loop blends make patterns.

For stairs and hallways, pick a tight twist or loop that resists crushing.

Density and twist

Density, or how tightly tufts are packed, tells you more about durability than height. Press a finger into the carpet: a dense one resists, a loose one lets you feel the backing.

Higher twist means the fibers hold their shape longer.

Padding

A good pad adds comfort, reduces noise and protects the carpet. Too soft a pad can break down the backing, too thin a pad does not protect it.

Replace the pad whenever you replace the carpet.

Quick answers

What carpet is best for stairs?

A dense, tight-twist or low-loop carpet resists crushing and holds up to constant traffic.

How long should carpet last?

It depends on the fiber, density, pad and traffic. Good care and professional cleaning extend its life.
